48. 돈오(頓悟, 단박에 깨달음)와 점수(漸修, 차츰 닦음)
Sudden Enlightenment and Gradual Cultivation            

 

돈오(頓悟, 단박에 깨달음)와 점수(漸修, 차츰 닦음)

행도를 하는길은 돈오와 점수 뿐이네
The path of practice consists of sudden enlightenment 

and gradual cultivation,
그러니 돈오점수 두문은 성인 길이네
Therefore, the gates of sudden enlightenment 

and gradual cultivation are the path of maturity,
성인은 누구나가 먼저 깨닫고 닦았네
Maturity is when everyone first realizes and cultivates.

이른바 깨달음에 의지해 닦고 익혔네
Relying on so-called enlightenment, they cultivate and refine,
진리는 알았다고 되는 것이 아니라네
Knowing the truth is not enough,
꾸준히 갈고 닦아야 경지에 올라가네
You must diligently polish and refine to ascend to higher stages.

도는 알고 모르는데 속함이 아니라네
It's not about knowing or not knowing,
티끌과 같은 경계는 본래 실체가없네
The boundary like dust originally has no substance,
모든존재가 다 실체가 없는 것이라네
All existence is inherently without substance.

고요하며 공한것이 바로 그대 이라네
Silence and emptiness are precisely you,
만일 이 마음만 깨닫는다면 다하였네
If only this mind realizes, everything is accomplished,
왜 아직도 돌이켜 보지않고 밖에있나
Why still turn away and look outside?

본래의 마음은 바로 너의속에 있는데
The original mind is right within you,
아직도 나라는 관념에 집착해 사는가
Are you still attached to the concept of 'I'?
근본이 없는 것임을 깨달아 알고나면
Once you realize its fundamental absence,
사랑하고 미워하는 것 절로 없어지며
Love and hatred naturally disappear,
사랑과 자비와 지혜가 저절로 밝아져
Love, compassion, and wisdom naturally shine,
번뇌가 다하고 죽음도 없어짐을 아네
Worries are extinguished, and even death disappears.
